CHARACTER DETAILS

Name: Morgan Knight
Canon: OC (made under Mage: the Ascension rules)
Canon Point: Current?
Age: 23

Heba or Tian? Tian. Morgan has traits from both planets, but at first glance generally seems Heban, so aligning him with Tian is meant to hint at that inner contemplativeness he possesses.
Acquired Ability: Magic

Personality Traits:
strengths:
Grounded and Confident: After everything Morgan has been through, he is pretty damn centered and balanced. He is difficult to upset, difficult to dismay, and difficult to discourage. In many ways he's achieved inner peace and acceptance of life: accept what must be, the pleasure with the pain, the downs with the ups, and live well.
Always Striving to Learn: Akashic philosophy is that everything is martial arts. As a consequence, Morgan always tries to learn new things and improve on what he already knows. This also lends itself to optimism and eagerness, as well as a willingness to take on difficult tasks without hesitation.
Generally Decent Morgan's generally a good guy. He's not perfect by any means, but he likes people, tries to help them where possible, and tries to respect them as well. It would be easy to solve problems by throwing money or Magick at it, but Morgan always gives others the choice, even if they choose not to accept his help.
weaknesses:
Hiding His Own Problems: After years of being a screw-up and burdening others with his issues, Morgan believes he has absolutely no right to do that to anyone ever again, and no right to complain in general. When things are going poorly or he feels down or something upsets him, he won't reveal that if he can help it -- even if he really should, to feel better, to a friend...
Likes Fighting A Little Too Much: Morgan has never QUITE been able to reconcile how much he enjoys fighting with the fact that the sort of fighting he enjoys is pointless -- one must either solve a problem without violence, or solve it with the most effective violence, which martial arts is not. He's a bit too eager to spar or show off if he can find an excuse, and he's often looking for one.
Vain: He claims he isn't, but he heals every scar he's ever had, keeps his hair long and glorious, uses magic to not have to shave, and is generally too proud of his good looks.

History:
  • Born to Andrew and Maureen Knight (a werewolf and a mage respectively) along with his twin sister.
  • His parents died in battles; a family friend sent him to martial arts boarding school to keep him out of reach of his family's enemies; Morgan grew up there.
  • Evil mages attacked the mages who ran the boarding school; Morgan tried to help and for complicated reasons got his soul stuck in a sword, and also became a Mage.
  • Morgan graduated, went back to reclaim his family legacy, and made friends and enemies
  • He ended up venturing to a nexus world his best friend knew of, a place that's basically an RP jamjar where all different worlds and realms intersect. Morgan made friends there too.
  • Got serious with a girl, who got murdered; ultimately ended up marrying a woman who got sentenced to death for complicated reasons; got a lot of emotional growth through all this, but also got really worried about a pattern developing here.

    Canon Abilities/Skills:
Morgan is a Mage of the Akashic Brother Tradition. Bluntly, this means he can perform 'magick', or in other words, replace reality with a version more to his liking. To put it another way, Morgan believes so fundamentally that he can, for example, heal someone with acupuncture, that his belief is actually capable of making it happen. Awakened Magick, as this is called, is not a list of powers, but a list of possibilities. Based on his knowledges of Spheres (areas of influence), Morgan can perform any effect he can think of within the range of these Spheres.

Spheres and what they cover are at this link. Each level of knowledge includes the ones below it, of course.

    Morgan's Spheres are:

Correspondence 2: Sense Space, Touch Space
    Forces 3: Transmute Minor Forces
Life 4: Alter Complex Patterns, Transform Self
Mind 2: Read Surface Thoughts, Mental Impulse
Prime 2: Weave Odyllic Force, Fuel Pattern, Enchant Patterns, Summon Prime Weapon, Activate Quintessential Matter & Forces
    Time 3: Time Manipulation

Morgan is also an exceptional martial artist, and practices a style called simply "Do" -- the Way -- which is an ancient Akashic martial art of unsurpassed skill and elegance. He is proficient in the use of guns. He is a competent businessman who has successfully started run his own company.

Suitability: The tethering mechanic offers Morgan a great opportunity to help others and also get help himself that he otherwise would refuse. The taken list offers about a zillion opportunities for an actually emotionally-healthy guy to bounce off people who, well, aren't that. Also, he's sociable and friendly!

    Inventory:
  • Special coat: Morgan paid a mint for a coat that's as flexible as fabric and as tough as solid metal. Also it has hammerspace pockets.
  • Electric guitar and portable amp

    CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE

What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?

Freedom is the right to choose for yourself -- and being a Mage means having more of that choice than most, and being in opposition to those who would take away that freedom in the name of safety but for the purpose of control. Or at least, that's how it gets posed in greater philosophical terms. Morgan personally tends to view it as something mostly limited by yourself -- if you don't have the freedom to do as you want, that means you need to get the skills, discipline, and training necessary to achieve it. If you asked him if he's fought for freedom, he wouldn't know how to answer. It's not a fight.

Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.

As noted, Morgan was a wreck for most of his late-teenage years, and incredibly good at making people dislike him (not without cause). It so happened one day that, while sitting at a bar whining about something or other, he doesn't remember what, one of the people who hated him and made no secret of the fact confronted him with a flat reality: he had health, money, and time. He could do just about anything in the world he wanted. Instead of sitting around feeling sorry for himself, do something! Go to school and learn something maybe!

The statement hit him hard, and just kept hitting him harder the longer he thought about it, because she was absolutely right. Morgan immediately set about enrolling in college, a path that ultimately led him to chasing an MBA and a conviction that he'd always be studying something in school so long as he could. This also crystallized something he'd never quite understood about how learning even the most intellectual and dry of skills or facts fit into the broader scope of martial arts, and led to his current attitude of "everything is martial arts" and his profound delight and willingness to try new things and enjoy almost everything he does. Lastly, it also helped form his belief that all people have value, even those who don't seem like it; if he could gain so much from someone who literally hated him, then doesn't everyone have something to contribute?

Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?

Morgan would hate to call any person his 'favorite', but at this moment it's probably his close friend Carolyn Valkonan. She's a stubborn and strong-willed brat, which Morgan considers positive points, but also unbelievably caring and empathetic, who's been there to support him if he needed it and is one of the few people he feels he can open up to. (If we're being honest, it doesn't hurt that she's incredibly attractive). The one thing Morgan might dislike about her is her wasted potential, in his opinion -- she could go so much farther and do so much more, but has stagnated quite noticeably since she settled down and started working on a family.

What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?

Morgan's arc has been a long and windy route from a total mess of a guy to an exceptional one. He's found his place in the world, total self-confidence, and immense growth as a person. Where he started off aggressive, uncertain, and flailing about at everyone's expense, he's none of those things now.

How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?

At his current growth and despite his relatively young age, Morgan's best-suited as a mentor sort, who can help others grow and reach their full potential. With the added mess of Tethers and the general way a lot of characters are some form of disaster, he can accomplish a lot by just helping others. For his own development, Morgan needs to figure out that just because he's in the stage where the teacher learns from the student, that doesn't mean he actually needs a formal protégé in martial arts to keep growing.
