Everything gets converted to Avalon magic blah blah.. you know the deal. I only got to skate it because my magic's been Avalon-sourced since the dawn of time. Which is a funny story I'm sworn to take to the grave, so no Q's. Bargaining's a rough one. What's the biggest deal you've made? The trick's in very careful wording.
My old magic was literally changing reality so I don't get it, but it is what it is there I guess.
Been sticking to small things. Helpful household servant stuff for now. I get what you're saying, the wording protects us both. Lucky me, I have some experience with business contracts.
Works in some worlds, not in others. Like you say- it is what it is.
Right. Well. Advice.
Protects you both, yes. Exacting words are all the more important when you try a more challenging deal. Always make an offer first, if they don't have an exchange agreed upon, they'll choose what the price is later and by their laws, they'll have the right to whatever it is they choose because you entered into an unspecified debt. Always think about what it is they can do with what you give, too. Sign your name, there are spells they can use to control you with it. Trade an eyeball and they'll keep it fresh, see everything they can from one eye to the other. Agree to give them flesh and blood, they could take your firstborn instead of a cut of the hand as you intended. Brownies, sprites, gnomes all pretty harmless, but when you start getting into unseelies and more powerful fae, you need to make sure you're not paying a far higher price than you think. You want to improve on your bargaining magic? Work on that silver tongue.
And never trade sex during mating season. Doesn't matter how hot the fairy is or what gender you are, magic gets wild.
Ooh, I hadn't thought about the name thing. I gotta think of a workaround on that. Overall I think I'm getting a lot of mileage out of incorporating "Appendix A" as a standard clause, it's loaded with a whole bunch of the usual "party of the first part doesn't do all this bad stuff to party of the second part". Seems a lot easier than writing it out every single time and maybe forgetting something.
Way ahead of you on the sex thing.
It seems like a really powerful potential magic, just relying on playing it very right and meeting the right people. But not really useful day-to-day like kinesis.
Smart you're writing it out. Not everyone writes the full text out and goes by bond of word. Easier to forget exact wording, that way.
Not all magics are for day-to-day use, but I guarantee you'll reach much higher heights than you will with anything you can use on a daily basis.
Though with more common ones, maybe try thinking side-to-side rather than up. Try building devices that work with kinetic energy. Think about those bikes that power blenders, but you've got magic.
I wish I could explain how hard that makes me laugh, but it's all about stuff from my old world!
I'd still like to understand our limits and how to overcome them, but this has been a pretty enlightening talk nonetheless. You've given me a lot to think about.
The only limits are your creativity and energy levels, Morgan. Everyone's experiences are different, and how you find a way to advance your magic is something only you can answer.
Hey, unsolicited advice and all and I know it might spoil the carefully-cultivated social media image, but you oughtta let this side of you slip out occasionally. I don't think a lot of the arrivals think you actually know your stuff. Might do them some good to get a better look at you.

😉
Do you think I'm more of a Robin Williams or Will Smith?
